In 1956, he became an officer of the Czechoslovak People's Army. In the 1970s and 1980s commanded a division, army corps and a military district. In the post of Chief of the General Staff of CSPA - 1st Deputy Minister of National Defence contributed to planning and implementation of international agreements on downsizing conventional armed forces in Europe.
