Czech Presidency of the Council of the European Union

On 1 July, 2022, the Czech Republic takes, for the second time in its history, over the Presidency of the Council of the EU. The Presidency provides a unique opportunity to shape the debate within the EU and its main task is to foster compromises among the 27 Member States on the key issues of the day. The Presidency rotates among the EU Member States every six months, providing a balance of power between the Member States and the EU institutions. How the Czech Republic tackles this role will have a significant impact on its future influence and prestige both within and outside the EU.

In the area of the Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and Common Security and Defence Policy, the Presidency plays a slightly different role. Its task here is to work in support of the European External Action Service and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. The Presidency helps reach compromises among Member States and organizes informal meetings and conferences to bring attention to its national priorities.
