On Wednesday 2 March 2022, the Government of the Czech Republic endorsed another donation to Ukraine based on proposal by Defence Minister Jana Černochová. This time the donation comprised medical materiel from the stocks of the Czech Armed Forces, specifically medical kits, CLS backpacks, folding stretchers, medical absorbent fabric, medicaments and various consumable medical materiel in the total value of CZK 20.885 million.
“Aggression by Russian bandit Vladimir Putin against Ukraine continues and results in many casualties. That is why we are sending, besides weapons and ammunition, also this material that we can quickly release from our depots and provide,“ Minister Černochová said and added the MoD was in the process of identifying additional options to help Ukraine.
That was already the fourth supply of military materiel the Czech MoD donated to Ukraine. Including this shipment, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have received or will receive materiel valued almost at CZK 650 million.
The Czech Republic first decided to donate 4,006 calibre 152mm artillery munitions valued at CZK 36.6 million already at the end of January. Shortly after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine, the Government quickly decided to donate thousands of rifles and pistols along with millions of munitions valued at more than CZK 188 million and later also some heavy equipment valued at almost CZK 400 million.
The Government also decided to increase the MoD budget by CZK 1 billion in order to fund the acquisition of small arms for the Czech Armed Forces. “The weapons will be purchased off the shelf based on a previously executed framework contract,“ Minister Černochová said. The contract with CZUB was signed in April 2020 for the acquisition of up to 39 thousand small arms until 2025.
