THE 96 HEAVY EQUIPMENT TRANSPORT COMPANY in Wrocław was appointed by the Chief
of General Staff of the Polish Army on 04 April 1974. The Company is a separate logistic
sub-detachment of the Silesian Military District subordinate to the SMD Commander.
The main task assigned to the Company is a transport of every heavy equipment like tanks, armoured personnel carriers,
engineer vehicles, wheeled vehicles, containers etc. Transport tasks are mainly accomplished by two sub-detachments
i.e. transport platoons for logistic unit of the SMD, but also for other units in Poland.
Main equipment consists of wheeled-evacuation tractors and transport trailers, so-called low-chassis units.
Until 1998 the Company had used mainly KRAZ 255B with ZPT-40 trailer (capacity of 40 tons)
and a ballast tractor TATRA 815Tp with ZREMB PN 601W trailer (capacity of 60 tons).
Today, the Company is equipped with the most modern transport equipment which took place of an old,
exploited, technically not adapted equipment that does not meet the requirements of a modern army.
These vehicles are saddle tractors with semi-trailers which can transport a heavy cargo up to 60 tons:
MERCEDES ACTROS with semi trailers GOLDHOFER and IVECO MP 720 with a semi trailer NS 600 ZREMB.
The tractors have got all axles drive and two winch that help to load and unload a transported equipment.
Semi-trailers can transport different kinds of caterpillar-vehicles, transporters, wheeled vehicles and
containers. They have got many modern constructional solutions and equipment like:
four rear axles of semi trailer are torsional - a driver can maneuvre much easier and tire wear is much lower;
ramps with spring actuators help to drive up a semi trailer;
it is possible to fit a new tire in a semi-trailer without unloading it, thanks to so-called axle suspension;
transportable means communication;
equipment (consistent with the ADR) for transporting of dangerous materials;
cabs with couches for two people and a fridge.
In spite of many facilities in vehicle service, drivers must have high qualifications
to operate the above – mentioned vehicles (a total weight of them may amount even to 100 tons).
Such drivers work in the 96th Company. They have got high qualifications and experience.
The Company, apart from its current work, counteracts the results of natural disasters:
in 1992 it helped to remove the results of a big fire in Kuźnia Raciborska;
in 1997, during the memorable flood, soldiers transported container – houses
for flood victims and evacuation – vehicles PTS;
in 2002 the drivers of WZT-2 took part in the extinction of a gas – shaft in Wierzchowice.
