EU Defence Ministers discussed further support to Ukraine, tabled joint ammunition procurement in Sweden

On March 7-8th, Stockholm was the venue to an informal meeting of Defence Ministers of European Union Member States. The Czech Republic was represented by Minister of Defence Jana Černochová. The agenda comprised further assistance to Ukraine and the impact of the Russian aggression on global security. The Ministers also discussed options for collaborative procurement of ammunition for Ukraine. The working lunch was attended by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix and representatives of relevant Committees of the European Parliament. Ukrainian Defence Minister Oleksiy Reznikov attended the session in person.
Minister Jana Černochová met with Defence Minister of North Macedonia

Minister Jana Černochová had an official meeting with Defence Minister of North Macedonia Slavjanka Petrovska. The Ministers discussed the security situation in Europe as well as bilateral defence and defence industrial cooperation. North Macedonia is an important partner for the Czech Republic. Overhaul and upgrade of two Mi-8MT helicopters of the Macedonian Air Force will start by the end of March in the LOM Praha state enterprise. Intergovernmental agreement and technical arrangement on performance of the works on the two machines were signed at the end of the last year.
The Minister of Defence informed about declassified details of military aid to Ukraine

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, the Czech Republic has actively participated in international aid and supplied military aid to Ukraine. Up to now, information about the supplies was classified and could not be specified due to security reasons. However, the Ministry repeatedly committed to making the information public as soon as the security risk diminishes. In this respect, the Government charged the Minister of Defence Jana Černochová to inform the public about details of military aid to Ukraine in 2022.

The First Deputy Minister of Defence František Šulc discussed the opportunities for cooperation with his Japanese counterpart Toshiro Ino. For the Czech Republic and the domestic defence industry, cooperation with Japan bears a huge potential – Tokyo intends to spend 2% of GDP on defence until 2027, pushing Japan to the third place in defence spending behind the U.S. and China. Both countries also share their perspective on the current security issues.
